Important note
Each pathway involves assessment. Applicants need to obtain information on specialist medical college training and examination requirements from the relevant college directly. Medicare provider number applications are handled by Services Australia. Visa applications are made to the Department of Home Affairs. Applicants should not apply for a visa without their AHPRA registration number as this may delay processing. If being sponsored, applicants need a Transaction Reference Number (TRN) from their employer, which can be used before the sponsorship nomination is approved."
Eligibility Criteria
6 criteria- International medical practitioners who have gained qualifications outside Australia or New Zealand
- Competent Authority pathway: IMGs assessed by a competent authority and practised in a competent authority country (non-specialists and international specialists including GPs)
- Standard pathway: IMGs not eligible for Competent Authority or Specialist pathways
- Specialist pathway: IMGs with international specialist medical qualification
- Expedited Specialist pathway: IMGs with international specialist qualification on the Board's accepted qualifications list
- Short-term training pathway: Specialist IMGs and specialist IMGs in training seeking up to 24 months specialist or advanced training
- Documents specified in pathway-specific checklists (referenced as available for each pathway)
- Medical qualifications evidence (obtained outside Australia or New Zealand)
- Evidence of specialist qualification (for specialist pathways)
- AHPRA registration number (required for visa application)
