Typical Tasks

Common duties performed in this role.

Administering muscle, nerve, joint and functional ability tests to identify and assess physical problems of patients
Designing treatment programs to address patients' problems
Treating patients to reduce pain, improve circulation, strengthen muscles, improve cardiothoracic, cardiovascular and respiratory functions, restore joint mobility, and improve balance and coordination
Using the therapeutic properties of exercise, heat, cold, massage, manipulation, hydrotherapy, electrotherapy, ultraviolet and infra-red light and ultrasound in the treatment of patients
Reviewing, continually monitoring, assessing and evaluating programs and treatments
Consulting with other Health Professionals as required about patients' problems, needs and progress
Instructing patients and their families in procedures to be continued at home
Recording treatments given and patients' responses and progress
Developing and implementing screening and preventative health promotion programs

This page describes the Eligibility Assessment, the first step for overseas-qualified physiotherapists seeking registration in Australia. It covers eligibility criteria, required documents, application steps, and fees for the document-based assessment that verifies entry-level physiotherapy qualifications.

Important note

After passing the Eligibility Assessment and completing the Cultural Safety Training, applicants receive an Interim Certificate valid for two years, which is required for Limited Registration for Supervised Practice with Ahpra. The Interim Certificate does not permit independent practice but allows work under supervision. Applicants also receive free Associate Membership with the Australian Physiotherapy Association (APA) and professional indemnity insurance cover upon completion."

Eligibility Criteria

3 criteria
  • Be an overseas qualified physiotherapist with a minimum diploma-level qualification
  • Meet the educational/qualification requirement for registration without restriction in your country of training, OR
  • Be able to legally practise without restriction in your country of training (if no regulatory body exists)

  • Documents must meet specified upload requirements as detailed in the Fact Sheet
