This page is an FAQ resource addressing common questions about AITSL skills assessments for overseas teachers migrating to Australia, covering application procedures, eligibility criteria, documentation requirements, and assessment processes.
Important note
Fast-track processing is not available except in limited, exceptional cases with compelling circumstances and appropriate evidence, assessed case-by-case. Agent use is not required. Teacher registration is not required for AITSL skills assessment but will be needed separately to teach in Australia. AITSL does not provide pre-assessment advice on whether applicants meet criteria. Applications are assessed in order received. Applications can be withdrawn; partial refunds only issued if assessment has not commenced. Communication is via email to migration@aitsl.edu.au using your 8-character application ID.
Eligibility Criteria
8 criteria- Completed initial teacher education (ITE) qualification at Australian Bachelor degree level (AQF Level 7) or higher, or for non-teaching qualifications, Advanced Diploma/Associate Degree level (AQF Level 6) or higher
- ITE qualification must include at least one year of full-time study (or part-time equivalent)
- Qualification must be specific to the stage of schooling of the nominated occupation
- Qualification must include professional studies in education, discipline-specific curriculum, pedagogical studies, general education studies and supervised teaching practice relevant to the age range
- Teaching qualification must be relevant to the nominated school teacher occupation
- English language proficiency requirements apply (see related resources)
- All completed higher education qualifications must be included in application
- Work experience does not count towards meeting criteria; assessment is qualifications-based only
- Identity document (passport, birth certificate, national identity card, or official photo-bearing document)
- English translation of any identity documents not in English
- Award certificates and transcripts for all completed higher education qualifications
- Documents specific to the nominated occupation as listed in the occupation checklist
- Supervised teaching practice documentation
- Documents can be shared via My eQuals platform if available
- Scanned documents must be at least 300 dpi resolution in colour, in PDF, PNG or JPEG format
- Do NOT submit: short courses (less than 1 year), non-academic qualifications, professional development programs, incomplete qualifications, Year 12/secondary certificates, QTS certificates, induction certificates, CVs, reference letters, or employment statements
